Did Matt Kemp’s .5M Poway Mansion Sell at Auction?
It looks like an All-Star might have whiffed on an auction of his luxury home.
MLB star Matt Kemp, who was traded last year by the San Diego Padres to the Atlanta Braves, bought a 15,884-square-foot estate in the Heritage community north of San Diego in 2014. He paid $9.1 million, and reportedly invested an additional $3 million into the property.
He listed the Poway, CA, home in December 2016 for $11.5 million, which means he was ready to absorb a loss right off the bat.
The luxe bachelor pad—which includes an infinity-edge pool, tennis court, guesthouse, gym, and outdoor kitchen—was scheduled to go on the auction block on April 20, but the bidding was postponed to April 25. Billed as an auction with no reserve, the bidding never happened.
“Despite having qualified interest, including six registered bidders, and strong opening bids and a pre-auction offer, the seller elected to withdraw the property from auction,” Chanelle Kasik, a representative for Concierge Auctions, said in an e-mail. Kemp’s home attracted “over 425 prospects and 25 private showings.”
Listing agents Kofi Nartey and Morgan Trent did not respond to requests for comment.
“While Concierge Auctions takes the vast majority of properties they are hired to sell to auction —including each of the 12 auctions they have conducted in San Diego County—occasionally there are those that do not reach the auction block,” Kasik said. “The property will remain on the market and is still available for offers.” As of now, the slugger’s home is not on the market.
