Actor Gerard Butler and the delicious duplex loft he’s selling in New York City share an aesthetic: Modern vintage. Classic, yet fresh. Timeless but willing to take a risk.
But now, sadly, the two must part. Butler has listed his painstakingly designed, 3,000-square-foot space in Chelsea for $5.9 million.
The “300” hunk’s two-story haunt is warm, inviting, and masculine, yet it doesn’t sacrifice one iota of creature comfort. Vintage-style overstuffed sofas and chairs and delicate crystal chandeliers are the perfect foil for the high, beamed ceilings and deconstructed walls.
Film and TV architectural designer Elvis Restaino created the look over several years, from the 11-foot mahogany doors to the chipped plaster walls to the limestone columns scattered throughout.
The entire space is high drama, larger than life, and the ideal backdrop for a swashbuckling movie hero come to life. The loft’s real showstopper is the home theater, compete with a screen framed by an arch reclaimed from a Bronx cathedral and an old lion’s head.
“I like the area—on the edge of Chelsea,” Butler told Architectural Digest when the loft was featured on the cover in April 2010. “I knew it was going to take a lot of work to turn the loft into a place where I actually wanted to live. But I didn’t realize it would be four years before I spent the night.” He described the eclectic design as “bohemian old world rustic chateau with a taste of baroque.”
The loft’s main living space is defined by the kitchen, dining area, and theater. The first floor includes an office, guest room, bathroom, and powder room. The master suite is on the second floor, which also features 1,200 square feet of private, outdoor space. The loft’s listing agent is Kevin Sneddon, who said Butler has owned the property since 2004 and is selling because he doesn’t spend much time in New York these days.
But don’t worry, Butler is hardly homeless. According to Variety, the actor owns a three-bedroom apartment in his hometown of Glasgow, a Los Angeles home he bought in 2008, which is also on the market for $4.4 million, and a $6.45 million Malibu estate he purchased in 2016.
