0M Malibu Home Under Construction Is the Week’s Most Expensive New Listing

A home under construction in Malibu, CA, called the Case 5, is on the market for $100 million. The nine-digit price tag cemented its spot as the week’s most expensive new listing on realtor.com®.

Set to be completed in late 2020, the home is part of a collection of five new homes inspired by midcentury modern residential design. Prices will range from $50 million to $100 million.

The magnificent development in one of the nation’s priciest markets is the brainchild of designer Scott Gillen and his firm Unvarnished. In 2017, the longtime Malibu resident set a city record when he scooped up 24 coastal acres for $50 million. For those unfamiliar with Gillen, the developer was once a filmmaker and director before turning his attention to high-end home design.

Images accompanying the high-priced listing are renderings of what it will look like once completed.

Of the handful of homes set to be built, the Case 5 is considered the crown jewel of the guard-gated community.

Located on the coveted Malibu Bluffs, the sleek space with ocean views will offer enclosed, light-filled courtyards and water features.

Inside, the living space is set to feature an expansive great room, open kitchen, and walls of glass. The 6-acre property will come with an oversize pool as well as a guesthouse. 

Gillen’s minimalist design for these homes is an homage to the Case Study Houses, an experiment in residential architecture post-World War II. The innovative homes, many of which still stand, were created by renowned architects of the era, including Richard Neutra and A. Quincy Jones.

The Case project is part of an ambitious $500 million portfolio of 13 ultraluxe homes, all represented by Tracy Tutor of Douglas Elliman. Called the Malibu Series, all have been designed, built, or are under construction by Gillen.

The first of the luxury series—known as New Castle—landed on the market last year with an asking price of $85 million. The hilltop estate was built on the site of an iconic mansion that burned down. It’s still on the market today for $75 million.
