6 Amazing Things to Know About Dolly Parton’s Former House
Legendary country singer Dolly Parton remains one of the highest-paid celebrities in the country. She has a theme park named after her, and still performs at the age of 71. But between 1980 and 1996, she and her husband, Carl Dean, lived in a charming bungalow in Nashville, TN. That home is now on the market for $1.2 million.
The home has already hit a high note, making our list of the most popular properties last week.
The home was built in 1941 and has been renovated and expanded over the years—and it still has plenty of Parton’s furnishings. We got the scoop from listing agent Donna Brewer of Action Homes and the couple who bought the home from the country icon.
1. Hello, Dolly
The current owners, James and Oveta Pyburn, saw a “For Sale” sign on the house in 1996 and had no idea of its prestigious pedigree until they walked inside.
“It’s just got a feeling about it,” says Oveta. “Leaving it is going to be bittersweet. It’s amazing. It’s been an experience. To come to Nashville, and then buying a house from Dolly Parton, it’s been a trip.”
2. We’ll take everything!
The couple bought the home for $140,000, including an extra $5,000 for Parton’s furnishings. Oveta says the country music star’s furniture had a certain theme.
“She liked wicker,” says Oveta, who still has two of Parton’s wicker tables in the bedroom.
3. A birthday gift that keeps on giving
On the second floor, a handmade stained-glass window with butterflies bears this inscription: “Dolly, Happy 44th Birthday!”
Oveta says the window will remain with the house “because it belongs here.“
4. Memorabilia under the stairs
Oveta had discovered a rolled-up poster of the star that was left under the stairwell. It was inscribed “For Clyde.” Oveta had it framed, and today it hangs over a small table.
“I guess she was going to give it to him and never got around to it,” she says.
5. Dolly’s getaway
There’s a short-term rental unit on the second floor, and it’s decorated with Parton’s memorabilia. So even if you can’t buy the home, you could consider a short-term stay. If you can buy the home, we sense an amazing Airbnb opportunity.
The home’s website advertises “Dolly’s Getaway” as the former home of a “famous Country Music Artist! Can’t tell you who until you come visit us, but the name may give it away!”
The cozy unit has a side entrance and features two beds, a kitchenette, and a bathroom.
6. Karaoke heaven
A separate 1,500-square-foot building out back is an open room with a full bath. The Pyburns have used it as an entertaining space, holding karaoke parties (featuring a $25,000 sound system) and even a wedding reception for 82 people, Oveta says.
The couple are leaving the pool table for the next residents. And if you ask nicely, Oveta might even belt out her rendition of “Jolene.”
