6 Gorgeous Guesthouses (Almost) as Luxurious as the Main House
You’ll need a place to stash your overnight guests come Thanksgiving, Christmas, or Hanukkah. For most of us, that means frantically clearing out the “guest room” that’s really a study/playroom/extra closet, or hoping the ol’ sleeper sofa won’t pop a spring.
But if you’re lucky enough to purchase one of these luxe listings, which all feature detached guest houses, it’s an easy holiday solution.
However, we must warn you. The detached guest homes at the mansions featured below are so stylish, you might not see your guests much. Perhaps that’s a good thing? Your holiday overnighters might even prefer to make their own breakfast, given the gourmet accoutrements in these guesthouse kitchens.
9555 Heather Rd., Beverly Hills, CA
Price: $22.8 million
Traveler tidbit: Technically, this Paul Williams-designed property (he’s linked with the estates of Frank Sinatra and Lucille Ball, plus the Beverly Hills Hotel) is a 1.5-acre compound, with several buildings that include the main house and the guesthouse. On the grounds are a tennis court and outdoor pool, plus an indoor bowling alley, and home theater. If your guests aren’t entertained by these grounds, you need to find different guests.

850 West Lake Blvd., Tahoe City, CA
Price: $6.95 million
Traveler tidbit: A detached two-bedroom guesthouse mirrors the rustic-but-very-upscale vibe at the property’s larger home (which has four bedrooms and four baths). Cathedral ceilings, cool craftsmanship, and gorgeous lake views are elements of each structure. Plus both homes can use the private pier, which has a boat slip and lift.

6931 N. Chaparral Pl., Tucson, AZ
Price: $1.2 million
Traveler tidbit: Detached from this contemporary house is a guesthouse that—like the main house—features city views (cue stunning sunsets) from its elevated perch. Solid masonry and burnt-adobe construction on both homes are a nod to the Southwestern vibe. The property’s spacious deck and swimming pool create a posh playground for guests.

921 Fairview, Gardnerville, NV
Price: $1.3 million
Traveler tidbit: This 20-acre spread in Carson Valley is an hour’s drive south of Reno, and close to Lake Tahoe for quick ski jaunts. Inside the 1,798-square-foot guesthouse—which is practically a replica of the main house—are new windows, plumbing, light fixtures and hardware, plus mountain vistas. Guests can cozy up to the fireplace and easily make themselves at home in the kitchen, with its custom cabinetry and kitchen island.

713 N. Bedford Dr., Beverly Hills, CA
Price: $11.995 million
Traveler tidbit: Just as this seven-bedroom estate is tucked into one of America’s most prestigious ZIP codes, its poolside guesthouse is swaddled in luxury, too. The brand-new infinity pool is just steps from the two-room, 921-square-foot guesthouse’s front door and has its own garage—plus access to the outdoor kitchen. A contemporary, very clean design is apparent in both residences.
———
308 Sagaponack Rd., Bridgehampton, NY
Price: $3.495 million
Traveler tidbit: Life in the Hamptons means an ever-rotating guest list—but hosting becomes just a little easier with this detached guesthouse. A two-car garage, screened porch and ample storage give it a homey feel. Also on the 45-acre lot is an outdoor pool. The six-bedroom, 6.5-bath main house, built in 1920, features an attached studio that’s perfect for dabbling in creative activities.
