10 Epic Design Fails Hiding Inside People’s Homes
10 Epic Design Fails Hiding Inside People’s Homes
There are epic design fails that can easily be erased—say, by simply removing that lime-green plaid pillow from the purple velour sofa, burning it, scattering the ashes in a holy place, and then going on with your life. What could be easier? But then there are some design flops that are more entrenched in a home’s architecture and harder to fix. And you know what that means? They live forever in design infamy, especially if someone takes a photo of the gaffe and posts it online for all to see.
That’s how we came across these beauties below. We don’t know much about most of these photos’ origins, and we also don’t want to think about what these design crimes did to the resale value of these homes. But it is a bit of a laugh to speculate about how Realtors® might have tried explaining them to would-be buyers—or how the homeowners managed to explain them to their guests.
For the work-at-home type who hates long bathroom breaks…
This may be the ideal setup for the person who takes working at home very seriously. But that same person’s ultimate mastery of the mute button on the telephone is an essential skill.

To store stuff in really safe drawers…
Which came first? The wall or the drawers? We’re betting on the drawers, and we’re hoping the owners removed their passports, birth certificates, and other important documents before the construction was complete.
———
To make the stairs a tad more challenging…
Believe it or not, there’s a staircase hidden in there somewhere. We’re not sure we’d go for this carpet in any room of the house, but on a staircase, it could be fatal.
———
Room with a (tiny) view
Somewhere out there, a Realtor is touting the fact that this bedroom/office/whatever has a window. Technically, that’s true. But this small opening appears to be ideal only for the passing of hate notes to whoever’s on the other side of the wall, who has the lion’s share of the window.
———
Just watch your step…
At least this property owner was kind enough to put a chair under the door to serve as a stair step. This is another one of those situations where you hope the homeowner has hefty insurance.
———
Maybe measure the fan before you mount it?
Just imagine the look on this poor homeowner’s face, when, in anticipation of finally getting some cool air on a hot day, she flips the switch and the fan begins to revolve…
———
There’s really no coming out of this closet
You can just imagine the nasty skeletons that are hiding in this closet. They must be so potentially embarrassing the homeowner decided to close them off forever, while being helpful enough to provide support for those going down the stairs.
———
Stairs to nowhere
Stare at these stairs for as long as you like, but you’ll still be hard-pressed to figure out how they got that bike down into that basement. There would be no escaping this modern dungeon. Latter-day Lannisters would be so proud!
———
Speaking of freaky stairs…
All that weight you lose schlepping up and down the stairs 50 times a day will come in handy as you squeeze between the wall and the handrail. At least you don’t have to worry about the kids being tempted to slide down the banister.
———
A watched pot…
It’s bad enough to see a toilet in an office, but seeing it in a kitchen seems like a far worse mix. And the shower? Well maybe that’s for people who want to wash more than just their hands before dinner. Everyone knows space is of the essence in tiny homes, but so is privacy. And don’t even think about the confusing aromas.
