‘Magical’ Polynesian Pole House in Maui Has Ocean for Its Front Yard

If you’d rather snorkel than mow the lawn, consider this Polynesian pole house in Maui, HI. The unique home—which is located on a point of the island and has the Pacific Ocean for a front yard—is on the market for $9,875,000.

While there are some trees and grass surrounding the home, it’s the sparkling water that’s the focus of this eco-friendly abode with dramatic ocean views. You could take a morning swim or an afternoon snorkel with turtles. Turtles!

“The ocean is your front yard. It’s a magical playground,” says listing agent Anna Severson with Hawaii Life in Lahaina.

“It’s really one of a kind,” she adds. Properties with this kind of ocean frontage in Maui are “very, very hard to find.”

The second-floor patio offers views of Lanai and Molokai islands, and a pathway leads to tide pools and the ocean.

Depending on the season, you’ll see breaching whales, leaping dolphins, or skilled surfers.

The house is primarily made of redwood and native koa wood, which are fashioned around vertical wood poles. The home features indoor-outdoor living spaces, including a covered patio and wraparound decks.

This surfer’s paradise was designed by Frank Stiller and constructed in 1981 for a local restaurateur.

Pole homes, according to HawaiiLife.com, work this way: “Large-diameter vertical wood poles are bolted or sunken into concrete footings, which carry the weight of the floor and roof. Girder beams and floor joists are bolted directly to the notched vertical poles, creating a unique structural grid-like system.”

The structures can be built on rocky sites that are less than ideal for other types of construction, and with the least disruption to the land. They also tend to be naturally cooler, a perk in a tropical climate.

“Pole homes usually have deep eaves and can protect the house from the hot afternoon sun,” according to HawaiiLife.

The Maui pole home was sold in the mid-1990s to the current owners, who have now decided to let it go, according to Severson.

The 3,746-square-foot island retreat has five bedrooms, four bathrooms, a game room, sauna, and hot tub. The upstairs study can double as a guest room.

The home is being sold fully furnished, so you can move right in.

The gated community of Papaua Place, in the area known as Lahaina, has just 11 homes. It is located near resorts and golf courses.

Severson notes that there’s a mix of year-rounders and vacationers who own homes in the area. The current owners have even rented out their place as a short-term vacation home, a possibility for the next owners as well.
