“The Orchid Thief” author Susan Orlean is closing the chapter on her Studio City, CA, home. Called the Roth residence, the 1946 home designed by Rudolph Schindler is on the market for $2.3 million.
Orlean, an admitted “maniac” about architecture, certainly has impeccable taste that’s not at all crazy. Designed by the renowned modernist, the home was purchased in 2007 for $1,525,000.
A “sensitive restoration [has] maintained architectural integrity,” according to the listing.
With views of the San Gabriel Mountains, the three-bedroom, three-bath home features original built-ins, skylights, a galley-style kitchen, and a breakfast banquette. The bathrooms appear to be outfitted with vintage tile.
The home has had some updates, including the addition of a writing studio by Bestor Architecture.
“We walked into this house, and it was fascinating,” Orlean recounted to Curbed in 2016. “Schindler really adapted it to the site. There’s nothing about it that’s the typical LA ‘look at me’; it’s a pretty quiet little house. Like living inside of sculpture.”
Stand-out details include an open layout, stone fireplace in the living room, floor-to-ceiling windows that look out to the garden and surrounding views, stainless-steel appliances in the kitchen, and hardwood flooring throughout.
Although the home measures no more than 1,564 square feet, Orlean says, “the outside counts as another room.”
The backyard contains a fire pit and seating area overlooking the gardens.
The nonfiction best-seller “The Orchid Thief” became the basis for the 2002 movie “Adaptation.” Orlean’s character in the film was played by Meryl Streep. The 61-year-old writer also owns a home in New York.
