Katherine Power and her husband, Justin Coit, know a thing or two about style, taste, and design. She’s the founder of Clique Media, which encompasses design brands like Who What Wear, My Domaine, Byrdie, and more. He’s a photographer who has shot gorgeous homes and celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence and Cindy Crawford.
So it was no surprise that when they decided to redesign their 1928 Spanish Colonial home in the posh but cozy community of Little Holmby in Los Angeles, the results would make Architectural Digest.
What is a surprise is that now that the redesign is done and dusted, they’re opting to sell it. It’s now on the market for $8 million.
“She’s a very creative professional,” says listing agent Alexandria Brunkhorst, referring to Power. “While it was an extremely difficult decision to leave, she loves real estate, and she’s eager to move on to her next project.”
The couple purchased the four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home in 2015 for $4,225,000, and began their remodel with the help of designer Jake Arnold of 4C Design Group. Coit told Architectural Digest: “Our overall goal was to take this home from the typical L.A.-Spanish feel to something along the lines of a sophisticated home in Montecito.”
Unlike most remodeling projects, this one began outside—the home’s backyard is no longer dominated by a large pool.
Once the pool’s size and depth was reduced and the yard was reimagined, there was more room for stately and picturesque olive trees, an outdoor dining area, a high-end barbecue, two lounge areas, a lawn, and a fire pit.
The front exterior has been refreshed, but care was taken to retain its charm. The fountain, the gravel courtyard, and the prominent vertical windows upstairs that line the wall of a sun-filled office have all the charm of the original home.
Inside the 4,085-square-foot home, they replaced the terra-cotta tile flooring so typical of this home style with wide-plank French oak. They kept the arched doorways and white plaster walls, but freshened them up, and added in dark, paned windows and French doors to let in more light.
The home’s open kitchen has been updated and expanded, with modern finishes and appliances as well as open shelving.
The bathrooms were also updated, in particular the master bath, which now has a graceful soaking tub and modern fixtures. The entire master suite has been freshened—it features his-and-hers closets and a private balcony, as well as views of Century City and the greenery of the lush neighborhood.
“There are so many things I love about this home, but one of my favorite aspects is its site,” says Brunkhorst. “It sits on a slightly elevated lot in the sweetest family neighborhood—a private enclave, close to Wilshire, Sunset, Beverly Hills, and the Valley, yet completely private—almost like a small East Coast village.”
In fact, potential buyers of the property have felt so comfortable here that they frequently ask whether the two cats lounging about come with the home. “The cats are definitely an exclusion,” says Brunkhorst. “Almost everything else is negotiable.”
