Dramatic Duplex Makeover in South Florida Makes for Midcentury Magic

When it was built in 1969, this home in Wilton Manors, FL, was a nondescript duplex. Now, after an extensive and smart remodel, it’s one of the most unique midcentury modern homes in the area. It was listed for $695,000 earlier this year before a buyer snagged it.

Award-winning architect Dan Duckham, an understudy of Frank Lloyd Wright, helped the property’s previous owner renovate the duplex, transforming it into a large, airy, single-family abode. The face-lift was finished in 1999, and the home continues to stand out as a piece of art in the neighborhood.

“There’s really nothing like it in this area,” says listing agent Johnathan Ibarra-Blackmoon.

After being reimagined as a 2,074-square-foot residence, the four-bedroom home has “been featured in a few magazines,” says Ibarra-Blackmoon. It was also featured on the popular TV series “Graceland.”

Florida isn’t known as a hub for midcentury modern designs, but the southern part of the state has plenty of eclectic architecture, and this home fits that bill.

Unique tile flooring and exposed beams run throughout the home. Floor-to-ceiling windows open to a picturesque backyard with a heated pool and palm trees.

Pops of color and an array of woods, metals, tiles, and stone fill every space, giving the home a one-of-a-kind interior that remains true to Florida and to its midcentury roots.
