The surf’s up, but the price is down on the gorgeous Laguna Beach, CA, home of talented TV mogul Ryan Murphy. In June 2018, the house went on the market for $18.75 million—this month, Murphy relisted it for $17.75 million.

“The price adjustment was made as a good-faith gesture in accordance with the market slowing a little,” says listing agent John Stanaland of Villa Real Estate. He’s co-listing this beach paradise with Rob Giem of Compass.

“With summer around the corner, this is the perfect time of the year to showcase this one-of-a-kind, irreplaceable estate in the heart of Laguna Beach,” says Stanaland.

Murphy, the producer and creator of such shows as “Nip/Tuck,” “Glee,” “American Horror Story,” and “American Crime Story,” acquired the Southern California beach property in 2004 for $4,475,000.

He then proceeded to completely renovate it, hiring architect Mark Singer and interior designer Cliff Fong to do the honors.

The finished product was featured on the cover of the February 2017 issue of Architectural Digest.

“Peaceful, clean-lined, modern, and oddly quirky, my finally finished family home embodies my fantasy of California—glamorous but effortless, a place to dream and retreat—and how I pictured myself living here when I was kid,” Murphy told the publication.

Stanaland praises the home’s architect and his design while echoing Murphy’s thoughts on California: “The estate was designed by Mark Singer, who was a famous architect, a personal friend, and client of mine before he passed. It’s a great example of his work. He took advantage of the entire 1.25-acre lot and created a home that showcases the best of California living.”

The property takes optimum advantage of the coastline, island, and ocean views. Manicured and walled gardens, plenty of dining and conversation areas, a lap pool, a distinctive pavilion, and a fireplace are found on the grounds.

“Once you get behind the gates of this property, you immediately know that you are a part of something special and can feel the attention to detail that went into the property, which took 10 years to build,” notes Stanaland.

The 5,000-square-foot main house has four bedrooms and an open floor plan filled with natural light thanks to an abundance of floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights.

The master suite features restored rosewood cabinetry from the home’s original midcentury modern design, and the chic master bath is as big as some people’s living rooms.

“There is no equivalent property in Laguna Beach, and it’s unlikely the city would approve a similar property again,” says Stanaland.

Murphy, 53, has two other mansions in Southern California, according to Variety. His main residence is a Spanish Revival mansion in the Beverly Hills Flats, and he just completed a six-year renovation on his mansion in Brentwood.
