Conspiracy theorists, take note. Area 51, a remote location in Nevada, does exist, but it’s anybody’s guess if there are alien remains stashed there. It officially serves as a training range for the U.S. Air Force. (Cue the “X-Files” theme.)

When a spoof Facebook event popped up to “Storm Area 51, they can’t stop all of us,” some 1.7 million curiosity seekers indicated they’d go to “see them aliens,” while 1.3 million marked themselves as “interested” in the proposed event.

Just about 1.5 hours from Las Vegas, the highly classified and remote government facility was built in 1955 to test spy planes. Not surprisingly, stealth aircraft operating in the area spurred rumors of UFOs.

Whether or not you believe the truth is out there, do believe that trying to actually get into the testing facility is a very bad idea.

Area 51 “is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces,” an Air Force spokesperson told the Washington Post. “The U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets.”

Still, local businesses have leaned in. A few miles from the site, tourists can find restaurants such as the Little A’Le’Inn, or visit the Alien Research Center. Even the highway leading up to Area 51 has been renamed Extraterrestrial Highway.

While the prankster behind the Facebook event revealed himself and admitted the whole thing was “kind of a joke,” people are seriously fascinated with the mysterious site in an otherwise barren area of Southern Nevada.

We’re also fascinated by the area! We’ve detected a handful of homes on the market that come as close as possible to the mysterious site. There are roughly 20 dwellings available for sale in all of Lincoln County—home to Area 51—a county that spans a staggering 10,600 square miles. We’ve highlighted 11 with prime proximity.

Listing agent Mica Robinson, who lives and sells homes in the area, notes that visitors should temper their expectations.

“It’s really desolate. There’s not much. You’re just driving and looking at sagebrush and cactus,” she says.

The remote town of Alamo, population 1,080, about two hours from Las Vegas, has a small-town vibe and a natural landscape that, so far as Robinson knows, is alien-free.

“We don’t see anything out of the ordinary, no UFO sightings,” she says.

Of course you could take it upon yourself to spend evenings scanning the skies for alien activity. Perhaps you could convert a property to an Airbnb and cash in on the out-of-this-world travel destination. And hey, you never know if someday an interplanetary species could come knocking at your front door.
