Big Ben Has a Big House: Catching Up on Ben Roethlisberger’s Housing History

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has starred in the Steel City for nearly two decades. After cycling through a series of Pittsburgh-area homes, the franchise QB has now settled down in Sewickley Heights, PA.

The land where Roethlisberger’s massive mansion now sits was purchased nearly five years ago through a trust. The land, which was then vacant, cost him close to $2 million and sits in a coveted area for professional athletes. Residents of the well-heeled neighborhood of Sewickley Heights include both the Pittsburgh Penguins great Sidney Crosby and Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux.

Completed in 2018, Big Ben’s two-story Colonial-style home boasts a whopping eight bedrooms, seven full bathrooms, and two half-baths. While we don’t have specs on all the entertainment options it offers inside, we do know that the home spans a massive 22,464 square feet. A large outdoor pool and spacious motor court are visible in satellite photos.

Roethlisberger has a thick playbook of real estate. Shortly after signing his first multimillion-dollar contract with the Steelers, he purchased a two-story townhome in Pittsburgh for $475,000.

Built in 1996, the relatively modest 2,423-square-foot home had three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. However, Roethlisberger was sacked on the sale of his starter home—it sold for a measly $360,500 in 2012, a 24% loss.

In 2006, the Steelers star purchased a sprawling home in Gibsonia, PA, for $2.22 million. He proceeded to customize the place with a load of cool features, including a garage for ATVs, a massive children’s playroom, and an indoor golf simulator.

Even with all the custom amenities, Roethlisberger tossed the eight-bedroom mansion onto the market early last summer for $2.7 million.

With no nibbles at that price, he slashed the price to $2,295,000 in August last year. The home wound up selling in November 2019 for $2.2 million—almost exactly what he paid for it a decade before.

In addition to his Pennsylvania property, Roethlisberger also owns a lake house north of Atlanta, on Lake Oconee, that he purchased for just under $2.2 million in 2011.

Last April, the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to two-year contract extension with the two-time Super Bowl champ. The deal, worth $68 million, came with a $37.5 million signing bonus, and Roethlisberger is under contract with the team through the 2021 season.
