A Goat Cookie Cutter? 5 Chip and Joanna Gaines Holiday Goods You’ll Regret Buying

Chip and Joanna Gaines‘ new home goods line at Target, Hearth & Hand, has been selling like hotcakes ever since its release in early November—and given the final season of “Fixer Upper” kicks off this week, we have no doubt this feeding frenzy will rise to further heights over the holidays. And yet, not everything in the Gaineses’ Target collection is worth the hype. Sorry, fans! According to the home and design experts we spoke to, some of these items are a bit too impractical, too strange, or just too precious for words.

As proof, just check out these head-scratchers below that experts warn you might regret getting (hey, don’t say we didn’t warn you).

1. A goat cookie cutter

Goat-shaped cookies seem a bit strange for the holidays. Or any day, really.

Christmas cookies in the shape of snowmen, Christmas trees, reindeer, and goats? We know Chip and Jo love their goats, but a goat-shaped cookie cutter (99 cents, target.com) takes things a bit too far. As Riverwoods, IL, interior designer Suzanne Falk simply puts it, “How many people really want a cookie cutter shaped as a goat?”

2. A bell place card holder

Does anyone really need a dinner bell these days?

Oh look, a place card holder you can ring to bring in your servants. What, no butler at your beck and call? Then you’re just asking for trouble, particularly if you have guests from the under-10 set.

“Cute concept, but let’s talk practicality here,” says Texas home and real estate expert Wendy Flynn. “How long is it going to be until some kid rings his bell, and then the other kids join in? Chaos ensues, and my dinner will be ruined because I’ll get mad and throw these bells out the back door in a fit of rage. And then, it will be a story that will live in the family legend—’Remember that time Mom put bells on the table?’”

3. A too-cute coffee thermos

This coffee thermos looks nice. Too nice, in fact.

This coffee thermos ($24.99, target.com) may seem like a step up from the usual clunkers you carry in your car, but therein lies the problem.

“It looks like it’s intended to be your go-to coffee thermos in the morning. However, the aesthetic looks like it was crafted to be a table centerpiece,” says Drew Henry at Design Dudes. “It is having an identity crisis here.”

4. A galvanized charger

Who uses galvanized chargers anymore?

Granted, some designers we spoke to applauded this galvanized charger ($9.99, target.com), but others saw it as a waste of metal.

“When I think of elegant dinner parties and place settings with chargers, pretty much the last thing I am thinking of is galvanized metal,” says Flynn. “This thing looks like someone cut a piece out of the AC ductwork system and it landed on the dining room table. I look at this and think I’m going to need a tetanus shot because I am for sure going to cut my finger on this! Same for their galvanized napkin ring and galvanized [ball] ornaments. Just no.”

5. A cutting board with leather handle

This cutting board’s leather handle might not wash well.

This cutting board ($16.99, target.com) also got mixed reviews: Some designers admired its beauty at first glance, but as Emile L’Eplattenier, a home and design expert and staff writer at Fit Small Business admits, “the more I look at this the more I hate it. First of all, why is there a leather strap on a cutting board?! It serves no functional purpose, and let’s face it, will become a nasty mess when you wash this thing. It’s only there to look ‘cool,’ but it ends up looking too severe, almost like some kind of S&M paddle. Who wants that in their kitchen?”
