Aloha! We’re in Love With the Luxe Lanai in This Santa Monica Home

We admit this lanai caught our eye. Built in 1953, this home in Santa Monica, CA, comes with an all-season, glassed-in room. While we’re in love with the priceless lanai, the whole home is now on the market for $3.6 million.

For those unfamiliar with the art of Hawaiian-style relaxation, a lanai is the Hawaiian word for a covered open-air porch. The lanai is a standard feature on islands, with their tropical climate, sea breezes, and palm trees.

But to experience living in a tropical paradise, you don’t have to step outside your door. You can simply wander into this two-story porch with a vaulted roof topped with skylights. The palm trees in this place are indoors. It’s like the best parts of a sunroom mixed with a lush greenhouse.

“It’s actually the ‘everything room,’” says listing agent Isabelle Mizrahi of Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices.

“It’s special, that’s for sure,” Mizrahi adds. The homeowners bought this “little, tiny house and wanted a grand room. There was nothing there in the courtyard, and they built this in what used to be open space.”

The homeowners added the covered lanai as a great room where they could entertain on a large scale, even in a 2,497-square-foot house. The room, with its stone floors and fireplace, is considered the “nucleus of the house,” according to the listing.

Along with a casual dining area, the lanai offers seating and entertainment space complete with TV. The agent notes that the doors to the koi pond enable a lovely indoor-outdoor flow.

Other thoughtful updates of the two-bedroom, two-bath home include a formal dining room, a light-filled kitchen with a center island, and hardwood floors. The master bath includes double sinks.

Additional entertaining space includes a back patio. But we’ll forgive you if decide to never, ever leave the lanai.
