Architectural Jewel Near Yosemite Makes Beautiful Use of Boulders

If at first glance you detect the style of Frank Lloyd Wright at this incredible California lake retreat, we wouldn’t be surprised.

Designed by Arthur Dyson, a student of Wright’s, the three-bedroom, two-bathroom jewel of a home in Coarsegold is currently listed for $590,000.

The home’s angles, clad in copper and redwood, were designed as soaring extensions of the landscape on the exterior, while providing the interiors with striking skylights and large windows for maximum views.

The outdoors and indoors are married by ancient boulders, which were incorporated into the entrance, setting the stage for a refined look rooted in the rugged terrain.

Built in 1996, the home sits on 2 pristine acres in Yosemite Lakes Park. A romantic retreat, it offers plenty of places to get cozy—from the Rumford fireplace in the living room to the conversation area surrounded by windows. Overhead, weathered wooden beams and other natural elements used in the construction blur the line between the indoors and the outdoors.

According to listing agent Eldon Daetweiler, the glass dining table is built into the home, but the other furniture can be negotiated into the final sale.

Dyson specializes in environmental design and has worked in the Fresno area for decades. He began his career in 1959 working with Wright on the Marin Civic Center in San Rafael, CA, and the Guggenheim Museum in New York City.

He brought a unique perspective to building a home on an odd-shaped lot.

“The lot was thought to be too rugged to build on because of slope and large boulders on the site,” says Daetweiler. “When Mr. Dyson met with the original owner, he said the boulders have been here for millions of years. We just need to invite them [in].”
