Baton Rouge Mansion on the Bayou for .9M Is Louisiana’s Most Expensive
Baton Rouge boasts some of the priciest properties in Louisiana, so it’s no surprise that it’s home to the state’s most expensive home for sale, at $5,995,000.
The “Palladio” house beneath live oaks is located in a country club near the bayou, on 3 acres. Built in 1996, the large-scale, classical estate evokes a bygone era—and we’re not talking about before the War between the states.
Architect Ken Tate designed the mansion, which became a noted property that was featured in a Louisiana State University textbook.
The 7,637-square-foot mansion has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. The grand exterior features massive limestone steps and Doric columns quarried from the neighboring state of Texas.
The limestone extends to the fireplace in the living room, along with an elaborate Roman frieze, hand-cast plaster coffered ceiling, and double chandeliers, according to the listing.
The dining room features antique mirror squares with a hand-cast plaster rope motif on the ceiling. Upstairs, the vast master suite leads to the rear veranda, solarium, and private library.
The kitchen and breakfast wing feature Tuscan-style beamed ceilings, clay flooring, and a private entrance.
Outside, there’s a kitchen and a pool with a hot tub described as a “work of art.” To top off the opulence, an enormous marble fountain shipped from Europe sits on the property.
“It has quite a pedigree,” says Quita Cutrer of Burns & Co., the listing agent.
The property, according to Cutrer, has had extensive additions that almost doubled the main house in square footage. Adding to the space are towers that flank the pool, with one containing an elevator leading to the downstairs guest quarters that are separate from the main house.
For just about $6 million, you too can say bonjour to a new home on the French-flavored bayou.
