Braves Outfielder Nick Markakis Is Selling His Charming Colonial in Maryland
Former Baltimore Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis loved Maryland so much that he never left, even after signing with the Atlanta Braves in 2014.
In an interview last year with the Baltimore Sun, he said he and his family still lived full time in Monkton, MD, and planned to build a new house in the community in the near future.
“That’s where we’re going to be,” Markakis told the Sun. “That’s where my kids were born. It’s where they’ve got their friends. We love the area. We love the community, so that’s where we’re going to call home.”
Earlier this month, Markakis listed his four-bedroom, 4.5-bath home in Monkton for $925,000. He purchased the Colonial-style, 4,900-square-foot home in 2008.
The home is warm and inviting, with an open floor plan and family-friendly features. To start, the 1.7-acre property features a wide front lawn, perfect for a game of catch. The home’s lower level features a living room, family room, den, kitchen, and dining room, all anchored by a central, curving staircase to the second floor.
There are hardwood floors throughout the lower level, with wainscoting in the foyer and dining room. Large windows are in every common room. The step-down family room is carpeted and has a fireplace with mantel; its coffered ceiling extends through the chef’s kitchen.
The kitchen features granite countertops, warm wood cabinetry, stainless-steel appliances, double ovens, and island with a gas stovetop.
Upstairs, the master bedroom has a tray ceiling and its master bathroom has stone countertops, dual sinks, soaking tub, and standalone shower. The finished basement has enough room for a pingpong table, pool table, poker table, and (probably) a second dining table.
There’s an attached three-car garage and a detached six-car garage. Markakis had turned the area above the detached garage into a professional-grade home gym, but the listing notes it could easily be turned into a second living area, possibly for an au pair.
Outside, there’s a fenced deck with a cooking center, a fire pit area, and children’s playground. Monkton, which has a median listing price of $512,000, is roughly 30 minutes north of downtown Baltimore.
Markakis was the Orioles’ first-round draft pick in 2003 and began his MLB career in 2006. He’s won the Golden Glove Award twice and slugged 157 home runs over his 11-year career.
In late 2014, he signed a four-year, $44 million contract with the Braves. He and his wife, Christina, have three young sons. Last year, the family sold a home in Sarasota, FL.
