Built for Sunset Magazine Publisher, This Portola Valley Ranch Is Picture Perfect
Any original home built by Cliff May—the father of the California ranch house—is noteworthy. However, we spotted a Bay Area ranch that ups the ante in a major way.
This May design was built specifically for the owners of Sunset magazine, the publication long known as “The Magazine of Western Living.” It was devoted to coverage of Western style, gardening, and cooking, so it’s no surprise that the home exemplifies all those elements.
Now on the market for $13,750,000, the nearly 10-acre horse property and iconic ranch house was built in 1957 for Bill Lane Jr. and his wife, Jean. The Lane family took over Sunset in 1928, and Bill became manager and publisher of the publication in the 1950s, leading it to national prominence. Lane eventually sold Sunset to Time Warner in 1990 and passed away in 2010. Jean passed away in 2017.

Besides the home’s prestigious pedigree, the ranch’s location in the exclusive enclave of Portola Valley is a huge plus. Portola Valley is known as one of the wealthiest towns in the United States, and is populated by a passel of discreet high-tech titans, thanks to its proximity to Silicon Valley. Lane was one of the town’s founders and became its first mayor in 1964.
The property originally landed on the market in 2018 for $16.5 million, but recently reappeared with a significant price cut.
It features a main house with five bedrooms and five baths, a poolhouse with an adjoining office, and a separate one-bedroom guesthouse. There’s plenty of space for work and play.
The play space is enhanced by full equestrian facilities, with a three-stall barn and riding ring. There are countless riding opportunities in the open meadows and extensive gardens, which have been featured in the magazine.
A pool and spa blend right in with the natural surroundings and also provide an aesthetically pleasing opportunity for rest and relaxation.
May designed the ranch house in the California adobe style, with Spanish tile floors, beamed ceilings, and skylights. It also features the floor-to-ceiling windows and sliding glass doors typical of his style.
In total, the property includes 6,610 square feet of living space and endless room to wander and soak in the views. We’re betting this iconic property will be snapped up at some point and wind up becoming the subject of yet another glossy magazine feature.
