Can You Spare a Few Minutes? Check Out These 7 In-Home Bowling Alleys
In-home bowing alleys have drifted in and out of fashion since 1947, when a two-lane model was built in the White House for President Harry Truman as a birthday gift.
But you don’t need to go to the White House to enjoy bowling in the basement. A number of luxury homes across the country boast bowling alleys on the premises, both vintage style and high-tech.
Agent Stacy Gottula of The Agency currently has two listings with bowling alleys. The Palazzo di Amore, a $129 million estate in Beverly Hills, CA, features a bowling alley as part of its enormous entertainment center. In the gorgeous $22.5 million, Paul Williams–designed residence, you’ll find a vintage alley that was built in 1941 for actor Bert Lahr.
“You’ll generally find bowling alleys in the homes of people with families, people who are active,” says Gottula. “People who want to have it all—comfort, convenience, recreation, entertainment, all under one roof.”
Gottula notes bowling alleys are more of a fun novelty than a major selling point in homes. “It’s not as if anyone is going to buy the house for the bowling alley. But whenever I show a home with one, the clients’ faces light up. Everyone wants to try it, everyone remembers it. It’s a defining feature that makes a home stand out.”
If you want to strike a deal on a home with a bowling alley, we’ve provided several options to get the ball rolling. If you can spare some time, have a look at these seven homes.
1011 S, Ute Ave, Aspen CO
Price: $39.000,000
How it rolls: An indoor, underground bowling alley resembling a mine shaft makes total sense in the snowy climes of Aspen. And if you’re bored with bowling, the indoor pool, spa, wine room, bar, and home theater in this grand estate all supplement the indoor entertainment factor.
———
Undisclosed address, Windermere, FL
Price: $18,950,000
How it rolls: There’s plenty of space to clown around in this two-lane bowling alley. Once you’re done rolling strikes, retire to the elaborate sports bar with a nearby pool table, the home theater, or the massive arcade.
———
2228 Via Cerritos, Palos Verdes Estates, CA
Price: $9,999,000
How it rolls: This newly renovated estate on the pristine Palos Verdes Peninsula is a relative bargain for a place with grand ocean views on the California coast. In addition to the bowling alley, there’s a fancy home theater, tennis court with viewing pavilion, and pool and spa.
———
1078 Vaughn Crest Dr, Franklin, TN
Price: $6,900,000
How it rolls: Besides a two-lane alley with graphic carpeting, this posh pad outside of Nashville boasts a whiskey bar with a built-in aquarium, an elevator, and a “pet retreat.” Sitting on over 4 acres, the 20,576-square-foot home has five bedrooms, and plenty of space to host an entire bowling team.
———
7265 Markell Rd, Waite Hill, OH
Price: $4,995,000
How it rolls: This gated estate, about 26 miles from Cleveland, comes with 14 wooded acres and borders the Kirtland Country Club. The grounds include space for basketball, fishing, and hunting. In addition to the bowling alley, there are seven stone fireplaces to warm up in front of after a day full of rigorous activities.
———
609 E Eastwyn Bay Dr, Mequon, WI
Price: $1,745,000
How it rolls: This quaint, one-lane alley is in a 10,081-square-foot home on Lake Michigan, just north of Milwaukee. The modern Tudor-style home was built in 1994, but the bowling alley appears charmingly vintage. It’s the least expensive home of the bunch, but it has style to spare with corbeled chimneys, cherry millwork, a floating staircase, and seven fireplaces.
———
16141 Quiet Vista Cir, Delray Beach, FL
Price: $8,695,000
How it rolls: Fun overload? This bowling alley is part of a game room that appears to have come straight out of “Ready Player One.” The 6,000-square-foot game room includes a “two-lane bowling alley, indoor racquetball/wallyball court, massive state of the art 4K movie theater 186″ screen, HD Golf simulator room, three bars, and a concession center with popcorn machine.”
