Comedian Chris Hardwick Reportedly Buys Historic Los Angeles Chateau

There’s a new lord of the manor at Chateau Emanuel in the Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles: Comedian and TV host Chris Hardwick has reportedly purchased the $5.6 million, three-acre spread, according to Curbed L.A. (The final price paid wasn’t yet known.)

As we reported in October, the 1920s estate was built for Martin Bekins of Bekins Moving Co. fame. But for the past several decades it has been owned by the Kvassay family, who have had it on and off the market over the past seven or so years.

Along with the acres of “meticulously landscaped grounds” (we hope Hardwick has a riding lawn mower), the property comes with a 6,000-square-foot main house that has been upgraded while maintaining some original details, including hardwood floors, crown moldings, and leaded glass.

The home has four bedrooms, three baths, updated kitchen and bathrooms, a formal dining room, terrace, spectacular city views, and a lower-level game room with bar and lounge. There are also three guesthouses totaling 2,954 square feet.

The site of a presidential speech, charity events, weddings, and family get-togethers, the estate offers plenty of entertainment options. There’s an outdoor “bistro cafe,” croquet court, large pool, fire pits, manicured park and paths, a greenhouse, garden, and gym. The prestigious property also offers parking for 40. Laura Brandt of Partners Trust had the listing.

The green acres even caught the eye of pop star Katy Perry. When the most recent owners first put it up for sale in 2010, it was rumored that a limited liability company tied to Perry was looking to buy the property for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as a retirement home for priests. However, the property isn’t zoned for that type of residence, so the sale fell through.

Sadly for Eagle Rock residents, the 46-year-old Hardwick probably won’t be knocking on their door for a cup of sugar anytime soon. According to Curbed, the “Talking Dead” host bought the place to preserve it, not to live in it.

He and wife Lydia Hearst already purchased their dream home in Los Feliz for $11 million in 2015. As CEO of Nerdist Industries, Hardwick hosts a popular talk show on AMC about the zombie TV series “Walking Dead,” called “Talking Dead,” as well as the interview show “Talking with Chris Hardwick.”
