David Mamet Relists Longtime Vermont Home
Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and director David Mamet is asking $729,000 for the Vermont farmhouse where he lived for years and wrote a number of his works.
The four-bedroom house has been on the market before, said listing agent Kurt Zschau of Four Seasons Sotheby’s International Realty. It went on the market in March of last year for $849,000. The price was reduced to $729,000, and it was taken off the market in December after failing to sell. Mr. Zschau said Vermont, especially in rural areas, hasn’t yet fully recovered from the real-estate downturn. “It’s been a challenging market for rural estates,” he said.
Located on 194 acres in the town of Woodbury, about 60 miles from Burlington, the post-and-beam cape measures about 3,300 square feet, according to Mr. Zschau. The grounds also include a barn and cabin, where Mr. Mamet said he wrote the play “Glengarry Glen Ross,” which won the Pulitzer Prize in 1984. He said he worked in the cabin using a typewriter or pen and ink; in the winter his pens would freeze, so he’d use the wood stove to defrost them.
Mr. Mamet, 68, first came to Vermont in the 1960s as a college student. He said he bought this house in the late 1970s, and raised his two oldest daughters there. Built around 1805, the house had been abandoned. He repaired and restored the house, refinishing the pine floors and finding a blacksmith to hand-forge the missing iron latches and hooks. Over the years he expanded the house and built the barn, which has a wood shop on the first floor and a guest room and bath on the second floor.
Mr. Mamet said he has happy memories of ice-skating on the pond on the property and cross-country skiing in the woods with his children. And the property’s remote location on a dirt road provided “magnificent solitude.”
Mr. Mamet, who is working on a memoir called “The Jacket,” said he is selling because he now lives primarily in Los Angeles and no longer spends much time in Vermont.
