Did Robert Downey Jr. Breeze Into the Hamptons to Buy a Windmill?
“Iron Man” star Robert Downey Jr. and his wife, Susan, have blown into the Hamptons real estate market with the purchase of a historic windmill cottage in East Hampton, NY.
Behind the Hedges reports that the couple—who spend most of their time in Malibu—have purchased the Edward DeRose Windmill Cottage. Built in the 1880s, the distinctive windmill on the property is a decorative flourish rather than a real mill.
Spread over two lots, the peculiar property has bounced on and off the market for years. The last listing price reportedly was $11.9 million, and property records show the Monona LLC purchased it last summer for $10.5 million. According to Behind the Hedges, “word has it” that Downey is the celebrity linked to the LLC.
The main home attached to the windmill has four bedrooms, 4.5 baths, a tennis court, and a sundeck attached to the master suite. There’s also a two-bedroom guesthouse on the property.
If you want to experience a windmill-bedecked home but don’t want to pester the A-lister for an invite, there is another opportunity for a buyer to breeze into a Hamptons home complete with windmill. About four miles up the road in Amagansett sits a home with a working windmill currently on the market as a rental for $45,000 a month.
Downey, 52, is one of Hollywood’s highest-paid actors, according to Forbes. As for his new Hamptons home, it (and the windmill) was featured in the 1982 movie “Deathtrap.”
