We’ve seen plenty of converted schoolhouses popping up on the market, but what if you want the academic vibe and need just a little more space? That is, two stories, 15 classrooms, and a basketball court worth of space.

You can have all that and more if you purchase this 32,000-square-foot former high school in Globe, AZ, for the modest sum of $649,000.

“If you’ve been inside of it, you’re just in awe of the structure of the building,” says listing agent Laura Good.

There are all the classrooms, a large outdoor area, and a two-story, regulation-size basketball court. The full fire suppression system is still in place. Chalkboards are still up in the classrooms for bonus educational activities. And some of the walls retain their original murals for a cheerful academic touch.

You can conduct your activities under the watchful gaze of birds of prey, desert creatures, or sprawling desert landscapes. If painted views aren’t for you, there are many windows in the building’s atrium for you to survey the landscape.

The property, which was abandoned for decades, will need some updating and cleaning. And its potential is endless.

Some interested buyers have considered turning it into an indoor mall, assisted-living facility, rehabilitation facility, or medical clinic.

“Everybody’s just got their ideas of what they see it being, and I think they’re all good. It’s a great building,” says Good.

We’re thinking basketball training academy, an indoor obstacle course, or possibly a venue for hosting that prom do-over you always wanted.

The city of Globe was named for the globe-shaped piece of silver discovered nearby. It’s surrounded by the Tonto National Forest, home to such well-named landmarks as Top-of-the-World and the Superstition Mountains. It’s also equidistant from Tucson and Phoenix.

Neighborhood residents have high hopes for what can be done with the building, which has been part of the area landscape since the early 1900s.

The seller had plans of his own, but ultimately decided to sell the building as is. He and the neighbors hope the next owner will make it into something great and help it live up to its potential.

“He wants to know that they’re going to do something with the building,” says Good. “He doesn’t want them to buy it and sit on it.”
