Actor and director Edward Norton is selling his two-story surf shack in Malibu, CA, for $5.2 million, less than a year after spending nearly $12 million across town for a striking, 1960s-era home with a curved cement roof.

The house he purchased, designed by renowned architect John Lautner, is a far cry from Norton’s beachside duplex, built in 1982, which is currently up for sale.

Norton, 48, bought the house in 2008 for $2.7 million, which means he’ll net a cool $2.5 million in profit if the house sells for full asking.

The home has no front yard to speak of, with just a short shoulder separating it from the Pacific Coast Highway. It’s one of dozens of homes that form an impenetrable barrier designed to keep the public off the beach below. Norton has put up a yellow warning sign on the front of the house: “Smile: You’re on Camera.”

Norton owns 43 feet of frontage on Las Flores Beach, and his house is designed to maximize those Pacific Ocean views. There’s a wide deck, a half-dozen palm trees, a Tiki hut with thatched roof, a surf rack, and a plastic, molded hot tub.

The home’s upper unit is painted stark, beachy white throughout, with carpeting, wood paneling, a brick fireplace in the living room, a rental-grade micro-kitchen, and a deck overlooking the backyard and ocean beyond. There are two bedrooms upstairs.

The interior design of the home’s downstairs unit is dramatically different, with hardwood floors, a soaring ceiling, and exposed wooden beams. There’s a yellow fireplace in the living room, an upright piano, beachy art, and a surfboard mounted on the wall. The kitchen downstairs isn’t much larger than the one above, but its appliances have been updated.

The downstairs bedroom has French doors that open to the deck, and is about 10 steps away from the sand.

In the listing, agent Chris Cortazzo suggests that the next owner could convert the house into a single-family unit, or keep it as a duplex producing monthly income. Before listing it, Norton rented the house out for $15,000 per month.

Norton is currently shooting his latest movie, “Motherless Brooklyn,” in New York City. He lent his voice to Wes Anderson’s latest animated film, “Isle of Dogs,” which will be released later this month.
