The name Peter Lassally might not ring a bell for most people, but he likely had more influence over our late-night TV habits than any other living human being.

He was the man behind the curtain for Johnny Carson for decades, serving as the executive producer on “The Tonight Show” until Carson retired in 1992. After his work with the legend of late night, he went on to serve as a producer for David Letterman and Craig Ferguson.

Now some lucky buyer will be able to enjoy Lassally’s view from the top, as he’s just put his Frank Gehry–designed Malibu beach house on the market for $7.25 million.

Described as “soft-spoken” and “genial,” Lassally has a calm and peaceful demeanor which may have been sustained by sunset views of the ocean from his home on El Matador Beach. Located at the end of a private street, the house has only one neighbor.

The 2,766-square-foot home has three bedrooms, three baths, and several beach-facing decks, balconies, terraces, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The house was built in 1982, and retains Gehry’s clean, modern style.

The main floor is designed to take maximum advantage of the water vistas, even from the kitchen, which has a unique peninsula with built-in bookcases. There are three white brick fireplaces, one in the living room and two upstairs.

Lassally’s storied life began in Hamburg, Germany. At the outbreak of World War II, his family fled to the Netherlands, where he was a classmate of Anne Frank. He and his family were interned in concentration camps before the war ended, and then moved to New York City. There he graduated high school and in 1951 became a page at NBC Studios. The rest is television history.

Lassally retired in 2015, with many remembering the soft-spoken TV titan as the “host whisperer.”
