Filmmaker Vincent Gallo has purchased a modern desert mansion in the mountains outside Tucson, AZ, for $3.25 million.

Built in 2007 and designed by renowned architect Rick Joy, the home mirrors the austere beauty of the desert mountains surrounding it. The house is elegant and formal, and its five bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms are lined with walls of windows, to bring in the views of the surrounding desert and the city below.

Built on 3.5 acres in the gated Ventana Canyon community, the home includes an elevator, guest quarters and dramatic outdoor spaces designed to take in the beauty of the surrounding desert and plentiful sunshine.

Gallo, a director, painter, model, actor, and writer, is best known for films like “Buffalo 66” which he wrote, shot and starred in, and the controversial and explicit “Brown Bunny,” which was widely panned by critics.

Last spring, he wrote an essay calling himself the “Donald Trump of Cannes,” while blaming the late film critic Roger Ebert for the poor reception of “Brown Bunny.” The essay, published in March by Another Man Magazine, was likely a farewell to everything he disliked about Los Angeles before decamping for the Arizona desert.

Clear night skies and saguaros standing like sentinels are as much a part of the home’s design as the steel and cantilevered concrete that make up its walls. The lack of artifice is key to its appeal. In that respect, the man and the home seem perfectly matched.
