Former First Lady Laura Bush’s Childhood Home for Sale in Texas
Before Laura Bush became the first lady and moved into the most glamorous house in Washington, DC, she lived in a modest brick ranch in West Texas.
Now that three-bedroom, three-bath house in Midland is on the market for $425,000, listed with Caroline Earles with Trudy Thomason Realty in Odessa. Bush—the only child of Harold and Jenna Welch—lived in the home as a teenager, from 1961 to 1963.
Her father, a real estate developer and homebuilder, commissioned the home’s construction in the ’60s. In her 2010 memoir, “Spoken From the Heart,” Bush describes Midland as “a place of ice cream sundaes … and Saturday morning pony rides.”
Compared with other properties in Midland (population 132,950)—where the median list price is $215,000—this 2,547-square-foot ranch has a listing price on the higher end.
What sets it apart?
“Most of the properties [in Midland] are three-bedroom, two-bath,” Earles says, adding that few have a carport as this one does. Other updates include granite countertops and an island in the kitchen. The open layout features a fireplace in the living room. The spacious dining room is ideal for entertaining.
The true perk is that the four owners since Bush lived there “have maintained the integrity of Laura’s bedroom and bath,” says Earles. Those details include original built-ins in the bedroom and the pink tile in the bath. “It adds to the historical value,” says Earles.
Also on the property is a one-bedroom guesthouse, which the current owner rented out for $900 a month. It could also be used as a studio, workshop, or storage space.
