Industrial-Style Townhouse in Redondo Beach Sells in the Blink of an Eye

Buying a home unlike any other in the neighborhood carries a bit of risk. You don’t want to be stuck with the white elephant on the block.

However, this industrial-style townhouse in Redondo Beach, CA, was a risk that paid off quicker than you can post a “For Sale” sign.

Once the seller decided to part with this one-of-a-kind residence that’s been featured in Dwell Magazine, the Los Angeles Times, and Architectural Digest, it was quietly snapped up in an off-market deal.

By the time the home landed on the multiple listing service, the sale was in the final stages of escrow. Best of all, the seller received the full asking price of $1,460,000.

How did this home manage to sell so quickly? Credit its unique looks.

“It’s unlike anything else in the South Redondo area,” says listing agent Brittny Burford of Re/Max Estate Properties. “Most of the properties here are Mediterranean, Craftsman, or coastal, so this one, with steel construction and concrete floors, was unique.”

The unit that sold is one of two townhouses on a lot that created a stir when architect Wes Jones of Jones, Partners Architects built the structure in 2005. His industrial-contemporary style was a marked change for the Southern California beach town.

The open loft design features welded steel construction, two-story ceilings, smooth walls, and concrete floors with radiant heat. The second-story bedrooms are connected through bridgeways and sliding glass panels.

The exterior of the home appears as if it were created from a shipping container, but it wasn’t, says Burford. However, the seller, who bought the place in 2013, became so comfortable in the home’s modern design that she’s looking to downsize into a new shipping container home.

This 2,200-square-foot townhouse has three bedrooms and 2.5 baths. The galley kitchen was recently remodeled and now has an Italian tile backsplash, sleek cabinets, and quartz countertops with stainless-steel Bosch and GE appliances, as well as a built-in espresso station.

In addition to its distinctive architecture, the property is valued for its coveted “South Bay” location. It’s situated on a quiet cul-de-sac within walking distance of shops, restaurants, award-winning schools, and the beach and harbor. There’s an ocean view from the master bedroom.

“It’s not the kind of property you usually see around here,” says Burford. “So when the right buyer came along, it was the perfect match, and the deal was done before the general public even got a crack at it. It appears people were just waiting for it to come on the market. There’s always a demand for creativity and quality.”
