High Fashion: Gucci House in Coachella Valley Has Designs on a M Sale
If you’ve seen a commercial where a luxury car glides smoothly up a winding desert road, chances are you’ve seen the access road to the Gucci House, perched in the mountains overlooking the Coachella Valley in Southern California.
And if you’ve ever wanted to drive that road yourself, point your wheels in the direction of the desert right now. The 10-bedroom, 11-bath designer retreat is currently on the market for $7 million.
Built in 1989 by Patricia Gucci, the only daughter of Bruna and Aldo Gucci of the Italian luxury brand, the estate is as tasteful as the drive up is dramatic. And while it’s secluded, it’s only about eight minutes away from El Paseo, known as the “Rodeo Drive” of the desert area.
In fact, the unrivaled location is what originally attracted Gucci to the property. As she told us, “Driving up California Highway 74—one of the most spectacular roads in America—on my very first visit to the property some 25 years ago, I sensed it would be something special.”
That’s an A-list endorsement coming from one of the world’s foremost arbiters of taste, who can and does live anywhere in the world she chooses. She’s currently based in Switzerland, but the desert dwelling is a getaway from hectic everyday life.
“I wanted peace and quiet—a place to retreat from city life in total privacy, without neighbors. Somewhere I could feel far away without being too remote. The absolute stillness of this lunar landscape only two and a half hours from the city (and just 10 minutes from Palm Desert) was exactly what I had been looking for,” she says.
Gucci’s refined aesthetic is evident in the elegant compound, which measures 10,885 square feet and sits on 18.58 acres. With a Moroccan influence, the large-scale rooms feature hand-painted walls and unique designs. Each bedroom has a private sun deck, which is in line with the easy, indoor-outdoor flow of the entire house.
The property also features two lavish guesthouses, a pool, spa, and tennis court. That’s co-listing agent Michelle Schwartz‘s favorite feature of the retreat.
“The tennis court is positioned to overlook the entire Coachella Valley,” she says, joking that tennis balls there are disposable items, because once they fly over the wall, they’re gone—unless you have an energetic all-terrain retriever as a pet.
As Gucci discovered for herself, co-listing agent Eric Lavey of The Agency favors “the journey to get there.” He says, “A CEO who wants to get away from it all would be very comfortable here, because he or she can tap into nature and check out, without being too far away.”
Gucci, who recently published a memoir, “In the Name of Gucci,” is reluctant to let go of the retreat she so carefully created, but now that her three daughters are on their own, the family doesn’t often have the opportunity to gather at the property.
“My life is in Europe now, and I’m no longer able to enjoy the house to the fullest,” she says. “I’ll be sad to let it go.”
