Home of Late ESPN Host John Saunders on the Market for .85M

The contemporary home where sportscaster John Saunders lived for decades before his death in August 2016 is now up for sale at a list price of $2.85 million.

Located in Hastings-on-Hudson, the home on 2.3 acres is the result of a massive renovation that transformed a small 1920s house into a “grand light-filled home that embraces the play of space and geometry in a clean, airy design,” says the listing.

Arthur Riolo, who sold Saunders the property in 1990, says the famed ESPN and ABC sportscaster had understood the property’s potential.

“He loved the amount of privacy and how close it was to his work in New York City [about 30 minutes by rail],” says Riolo, who is listing the property again 27 years later. “He hired an architect and completely dismantled the old house, and built a magnificent home for the Saunders family.”

The five-bedroom, 5.5-bath house measures 7,107 square feet and features an open floor plan. There’s ample entertaining space, a home theater, gym, and guest suite. Outside, there’s a four-car garage, pool, and hot tub.

Saunders’ widow, Wanda, and their two daughters have decided the house is a bit much for just the three of them, thus the sale. “With John’s passing, it’s expensive to maintain it,” says Riolo.

Saunders, who died at 61, graced fall Saturdays as host of ABC’s college football coverage. On Sundays, he hosted “The Sports Reporters,” a weekly panel of journalists. He was known for his calm manner, “a voice of reason in our often unreasonable discourse,” said ESPN host Mike Greenberg on Twitter at the time of Saunders’ death.
