Medieval Italian castle for sale for the first time in 650 years
Belonging to one family lineage, this grand renaissance castle is steeped in history
An Italian castle which has been owned by the same family since the fourteenth century is on the market.
The 80 room Castel Valer is located in the foothills of the Dolomites and is a short drive to Milan, Verona and Venice. It was built over a 500 year period from 1200 – 1700, and was acquired by the Spaur family in 1368.
The estate has been valued at over 31 million euros (USD 35 million), and combines Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque architecture.
“The home holds a lot of history for both my family and my country. I especially love the details in the Gothic Chapel and have a fondness for the Ulrich hall which was named after my ancestor,” said Count Spaur zu Flavon und Valer.

The castle includes 15 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, five kitchens, a banquet hall, library, two chapels, an octagonal tower, swimming pool and a wine cellar, all of which comprises of 3,300 sqm of net living space.
The grounds amount to 18.5 acres (7.5 hectares) and feature terraced gardens, orchards and forest land.
It is being sold fully furnished, so the new owners will enjoy antique furniture pieces including Venetian mirrors and glass chandeliers. Period features include unique 15th and 16th century frescos and antique crown roof tiles.
The property has undergone modernisations to incorporate all facilities expected of a 21st century home.
Castel Valer will be sold at auction on 8 September by Concierge Auctions.
