Next Door to Hearst Castle, M Cambria Estate Is Our Most Expensive New Listing
Cambria is a sleepy little beach town on California’s Central Coast, located about halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco along the famed Highway One. Best known for its vineyards and Monterey pines, it’s also the nearest town to Hearst Castle, the massive and famously lavish estate of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst.
But one of the area’s best kept secrets is a different modern-day castle built right on the border of Hearst San Simeon State Park. Priced at $55 million, it hit the market this week and strolled away with the crown of the most expensive new listing on realtor.com®.
“It’s hard to comp—there’s really nothing like it in Cambria, other than Hearst Castle,” listing agent Andrea Gilbert says with a laugh. Gilbert, who’s with Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty, is co-listing the estate with Carol Dotson of Hilton & Hyland.
Aside from this massive estate, Cambria is known for its quaint beach homes and cozy vacation inns.
It’s an 80-acre spread with ocean views that can never be blocked, because the land is bordered by the Hearst park as well as conservation land. There’s a 6-acre gentleman’s pinot noir vineyard, equestrian facilities, a helipad and hangar, and miles of groomed bridle trails.
The entertainment facilities make this property a true standout. There’s a 9,000-square-foot pavilion, observation lounge, musician’s balcony, backstage prep room, and modular stage.
There’s also a 4,500-square-foot entertainment hall, which features a bar, Murano glass chandeliers, state-of-the-art sound system, grand piano, and wall murals.
The owner hired artisans from Italy as well as experts who worked on The Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas to paint murals and add other exquisite touches.
“There are rare and exotic custom finishes throughout,” Gilbert says. She notes that everyone has raved about the vineyard terrace, which features ocean views and an outdoor kitchen equipped with a pizza oven, wine coolers, gas burners, a grill, a beer tap, and a fireplace.
There’s also a four-bedroom guesthouse and a caretaker’s residence on the property. All told, the indoor space measures 35,700 square feet and there are 12 bedrooms, 12 bathrooms, and five half-baths.
Who’d build such a lavish estate in this relatively remote part of California’s Central Coast? Gilbert says the owner is a private investor who owns properties around the world. Now that he’s retiring, he’s ready to let a few of them go, including a winery in nearby Paso Robles going on the market for $21 million.
Gilbert envisions the property being snapped up by a business for use as a corporate retreat, or perhaps by a Russian or Middle Eastern buyer who wants a prestige estate on the California coast. The rest of us can simply ogle as we cruise down Highway One to visit Hearst Castle.
