Old gold: Why Phuket Town is one of Thailand’s most endearing neighbourhoods

Far removed in character from Phuket’s holiday beaches, heritage-rich Phuket Town continues to come into its own as a unique investment destination

While most of the legions of holidaymakers who make for Phuket head directly to the beaches, longer-term residents know all about the charms of Phuket Town. The island’s capital is one of Thailand’s most endearing towns, with a beguiling blend of heritage architecture, markets and shopping options. Enhancing its appeal are numerous hip bars and hotels and one of the liveliest food scenes in the Kingdom. Unsurprisingly, given these attributes, a host of new real estate projects are enticing savvy investors. With all this activity underway, you’d be forgiven for thinking that civic character was under threat. But, with modern developments complementing existing infrastructure, this old town is learning some new tricks.

Limelight Avenue Phuket

Built on the site of Phuket Town’s old Indy Market on Dibuk Road, this contemporary community mall opened in January 2015, covers 7,000sqm and cost THB300 million. Conceived and built by a local developer, Limelight Avenue is set in a two-storey building full of small boutiques, restaurants, bars and fitness options. On the first floor, Absolute You, a health and lifestyle studio, holds pilates, yoga and core blast classes. There’s also a spa and hair and nail salons. For serious shoppers, the mall has a variety of fashion outlets, while dining options have a distinctly Japanese slant. The laidback atmosphere attracts a mix of young and old locals and tourists.
