Our Most Popular Home This Week Is an Amazing Barn, Plus a Few Surprises
New entries in our lexicon are almost universally horrible. Think “staycation,” “metrosexual,” and “manspreading.” Ugh.
However, we dredged up these terrible terms to shine a light on a fabulous new word we came across in this week’s most-clicked homes on realtor.com®. We love this term and hope to see it in many future listings: “barndominium.”
Yes, you read that correctly. This week’s most popular home is a self-described barndominium on 15 acres in Texas. What makes it so? Take one old barn, convert the second story into a cool living space, and leave the ground floor as stalls for four of your finest horses. Voila! A barndominium is born.
Beyond the barn, the agent described this Texas ranch as an ultimate property for an avid equestrian thanks to its covered riding arena, 11-stall barn, and three outdoor arenas.
Outside of equine pursuits, you were also extremely interested in ultra-expensive properties in California, Florida, Illinois, and Texas; a historic lodge in Michigan; and a cute gingerbread-like home in Pennsylvania.
Close the barn door and take a bite out of this week’s most popular homes.
10. 7 Fox Hunt Rd, Barrington Hills, IL
Price: $18,775,000
Why it’s here: Dubbed Hidden Ponds, this luxe mansion has been on the market for a couple of years. A million-dollar price cut last month has propelled the 30,000-square-foot home onto our chart. And judging by Google-suggested searches on the address, folks want to know who owns the extravagant estate. It’s home security mogul Dante Monteverde, and this is one of three properties he’s currently selling in the upscale enclave.

9. 317 Ash Ave, Pewee Valley, KY
Price: $1,350,000
Why it’s here: Modeled after Johnny Cash‘s Tennessee lakehouse, this round house situated on a private lake is touted as a great income opportunity. Well-established as a vacation rental, it’s a win-win. It can be either a year-round retreat or strictly a money-maker.

8. 999 E Tienken Rd, Rochester Hills, MI
Price: $295,000
Why it’s here: It’s a chance to own a property on the National Register of Historic Places for less than $300,000. In the same spot since 1827, the nearly 2-century-old Federal-style home was built by a local judge. We’re in love with the old-timey fireplace in the dining area.

7. 95 Metacomet Ave, Taunton, MA
Price: $434,900
Why it’s here: This 10-year-old Colonial is our mystery of the week. What’s the special appeal? It’s a couple hundred thousand more than the average home price in Taunton, but with five bedrooms and a big backyard, it does look like the perfect spot for a growing family.
———
6. 831 Claremont Rd, Carlisle, PA
Price: $279,900
Why it’s here: We’re going out on a sugar-dusted limb. The home’s allure has something to do with the fact that it’s known locally as “the red gingerbread house.” Built in 1840, this sweet Victorian is oozing with curb appeal and charm.
———
5. 300 S Beach Rd, Jupiter Island, FL
Price: $21,900,000
Why it’s here: Golfer Nick Price‘s fabulous mansion continues to attract clicks. Will the interest translate into a buyer looking for a home that’s way over par? Stay tuned.
———
4. 5950 Deloache Ave, Dallas, TX
Price: $28,500,000
Why it’s here: Originally on the market for $37.5 million in 2014, the Dallas mansion known as the Baron Estate came back for $9 million less in March of this year. Located on a private lake in the city’s most prestigious neighborhood, the home has indoor and outdoor pools.
———
3. 301 N Carolwood Dr, Los Angeles, CA
Price: $150,000,000
Why it’s here: California’s most expensive home took a tumble of two spots this week, winding up with the bronze medal. However, in the case of this extravagant mansion, we’ve chosen pure platinum to take the place of ordinary old bronze.
———
2. 2000 S Ocean Blvd, Manalapan, FL
Price: $195,000,000
Why it’s here: It’s the nation’s most expensive public listing, so why shouldn’t it be among the most popular? Our only question is what took it so long. On the market for over 100 days, this prestigious property offers a main house, two cottages, a three-story guesthouse, and a separate home for staff. It also comes with unparalleled frontage (1,200 feet!) on the Atlantic Ocean, and a “PGA standard golf practice area and extensive sports complex.”

1. 11806 Turtle Creek Ln, Anna, TX
Price: $450,000
Why it’s here: It’s our very first barndominium. We’ve never run across such a structure, but we’re glad we did. Sleep above your horses! Listing agent Kim Hunter told us living space is located on the second level of the converted barn, while stalls for four horses are on the ground level. Hunter said the 15-acre property has “everything you could want for a horseman,” including a lighted and covered arena, an additional stable with 11 stalls, and a tack room.
