The Palm Springs, CA, home of Pulitzer Prize–winning author Herman Wouk has come on the market for $2.49 million for the first time in over 40 years.

The home is where the author of “The Caine Mutiny,” who is 102, penned his latest tome, “Sailor and Fiddler: Reflections of a 100-Year-Old Author,” which was published in 2016.

Built in 1940, this Mediterranean-style home is nestled into a “gently rolling knoll,” according to the listing. The 6,943-square-foot home sits on 1.6 acres, including palm trees and a cacti garden, and features a pool and tennis court.

The main house features carved double doors and a rock exterior. Inside there are beamed ceilings, paver floors, and original mullion windows. There are nine bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and two half-baths. A three-bedroom, two-bath guesthouse was added in 1970.

The layout contains a large living room with fireplace; a custom eat-in kitchen features two cooking zones, skylights, and decorative tile. Amenities include a wet bar, cedar closets, loggias, and gated parking for at least 10 cars.

The storied home was previously occupied by movie star Natalie Wood and her husband, Robert Wagner. Wood starred in the film version of Wouk’s novel “Marjorie Morningstar,” in 1958. The author purchased the home from Wagner and Wood’s estate for just under $1 million in 1983.

According to reports, Wouk has decided to downsize to a smaller home, still in Palm Springs. His wife, Betty Sarah Wouk, who served as his literary agent, died in 2011 at the age of 90. The legendary writer has produced numerous works, including plays, novels, and nonfiction. “The Caine Mutiny,” published in 1951, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.
