Retired big leaguer Rick Ankiel has put his four-bedroom, 4.5-bath mansion in Jupiter, FL, on the market for $2.2 million. The 4,228-square-foot, Mediterranean-style waterfront home in the Islands of Jupiter gated community was built in 1999 and designed for entertaining guests.

Ankiel, who was born and raised in South Florida, isn’t moving far. He recently upgraded to a six-bedroom home nearby which offers more space for a new business venture he and his wife, Lory, are starting, listing agent Holly Meyer Lucas said.

A private gate opens to a circular paver driveway that winds through palm trees on a meticulously landscaped acre lot. Palm trees flank the front double doors, which open to an open-concept living room.

The living room flows into the kitchen, which has dark wood cabinets, an island, a wood-paneled refrigerator, and a dining area that looks out on the backyard and pool. The living room includes a wet bar with dual peninsulas, perfect for serving drinks or food at a party.

The master bedroom has a sliding glass door to the back patio, dual California walk-in closets, and a master bathroom with freestanding tub, dual sinks, double-headed shower, and built-in vanity.

Some of the home’s most notable features are outside. There’s a large pool and spa, kitchen, and screened-in patio. There’s also a Tiki bar with a mounted TV and three porch swings.

The backyard leads to 100 feet of private waterfront on the Loxahatchee River, with a dock that has separate lifts for a boat and a personal watercraft.

The property includes a one-bedroom, 367-square-foot guesthouse, tennis court, dedicated fishing pole and tackle closet, and six-car garage.

“This home embodies the Jupiter inlet and Jupiter waterfront lifestyle,” Meyer Lucas said. “The perfect buyer is someone who wants to get up and fish in the morning, golf a round in the afternoon, have a world-class dining experience in the evening, and sip some bourbon under the stars to the sounds of the river at night.”

The Ankiels moved to the nearby gated community of Rialto, which is home to almost a dozen other baseball families, Meyer Lucas said. Jupiter is emerging as a destination for professional baseball players, due to its proximity to spring training facilities owned by the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals. The Houston Astros and Washington Nationals both plan to open spring training facilities in Palm Beach County next year.

Ankiel is best known for his unconventional baseball career, beginning as a potential ace pitcher and then converting into an outfielder after developing control issues. He played on six teams from 1999 to 2013, and is the only player in Major League history (other than Babe Ruth) to have won at least 10 games as a pitcher and hit more than 50 home runs.
