Showrunner Dan Harmon Moves Into a New Community
Dan Harmon recently purchased a freshly renovated home in the style of a Spanish hacienda in the Los Angeles neighborhood favored by celebs and known as Magnolia Estates. The creator of “Community” and “Rick and Morty” paid $3.6 million for the six-bedroom, seven-bathroom, multilevel home in the town of Valley Village, a suburb in the San Fernando Valley.
The home already had a bit of celebrity cred before Harmon moved in. It was purchased in 2016 by actress-designer Mimi Rogers and interior designer Natalie Zimmerman for $1.35 million. They spent three years meticulously restoring and expanding the home—keeping its Spanish origins in mind, while updating it for the 21st century.
The 6,168-square-foot home looks discreet from the street, with a facade that features three front doors and an iron-gated, all-gravel front yard.
But behind those multiple front doors is a luxury retreat fit for Andalusian royalty. Originally built in 1937, the home only had two bedrooms, three bathrooms, and a rather awkward addition. Now, it’s full of tasteful, original features and unlike the cookie-cutter modern farmhouse homes that have become popular throughout SoCal.
The kitchen has elaborate, Moorish-inspired custom cabinetry and light fixtures. It also has two of every modern appliance, built to enhance the home’s entertainment capabilities.
The lush backyard is an extremely private entertainers’ paradise. There’s an oak-shaded brick patio anchored by a grand fireplace, a Mediterranean-style pool and grassy lawns, as well as multiple citrus trees. Completely shielded by mature trees and foliage, multiple decks, balconies, and verandas overlook the backyard and invite the outdoors in.
The Moorish theme is carried throughout the house, with thick plaster walls, more Moorish cabinetry, arched passageways, and patterned Granada concrete tiles on stair risers and in bathrooms—all updated with a subtle modern color scheme.
Other unique touches include a round fireplace in the living room, which also features a soaring, beamed ceiling. Custom interior doors fashioned from the lumber of a 100-year old barn have also been added.
With multiple dens, sitting rooms, nooks, and media room options, the 46-year-old Emmy nominee could easily produce his popular “Harmontown” podcast from the comfort of his own home.
