Son Sereno Is an Architecturally Awesome Equestrian Estate in Santa Ynez
L.A.’s Getty Center is one of California’s most breathtaking and impressive examples of modern architecture. Having the same firm that designed the renowned museum—Richard Meier Partners—create your private residence is a design dream come true.
That dream was a reality for the couple who ran the multibillion-dollar J. Paul Getty Trust for many years, Harold Williams and Nancy Englander.
Known as Son Sereno, their home in Santa Ynez, CA, has come on the market for the first time. Williams has passed away, and Englander is asking $9 million for the property they carefully curated.
The asking price also includes 116 acres of equestrian-zoned land, as well as the modernist house designed by Michael Palladino of Richard Meier Partners.
The estate is located in the wine country of the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. You might recognize the area from the film “Sideways.” A number of celebs also call the area home, and Michael Jackson‘s former Neverland Ranch is located in there. The valley features rolling hills; picturesque oak trees; stellar riding, biking, and hiking rails; and numerous vineyards and tasting rooms.
While there are other equestrian properties and ranches in the area, this one is unlike any other, according to Billy Rose, founder and president of The Agency.
“The house epitomizes architecture as art,” he said. “Of course it’s beautiful to look at, but life can be enhanced and elevated by living there.”
Palladino gave the main house custom architectural features, including a curved ceiling shaped like a wave cresting at 14 feet, which ends at a bank of clerestory windows. Those clerestory windows throughout the house allow an extraordinary amount of indirect light to give the interior a subtle glow.
“Michael really knows how to capture light and focus views,” Rose said.
There are dramatic views from almost every room in the main residence—which features five bedrooms and 5.5 baths, an eat-in-kitchen, private sitting room, and library. There’s also a two-bedroom guesthouse and a saltwater pool.
The equine accommodations include an eight-stall, center-aisle barn; a bathing and grooming area; tack room; laundry room; and bath. There’s also a hay and equipment barn, an arena, track, paddocks, irrigated pastures, and many horse trails. You could ride for days among the olive, oak, and sycamore trees, according to Rose.
“This is an ideal home for someone who appreciates architecture, equestrian pursuits, or perhaps an oenophile who appreciates the local wine culture,” Rose said. “Or someone from Santa Barbara or Los Angeles who wants to escape the madding crowd and enjoy nature. But it’s also wonderful for families. It’s incredibly flexible.”
