Swingin’ Broad Beach House: Frank Sinatra Wanted It, Now You Can Have It

If there was ever a swingin’ pad that could have enticed Frank Sinatra away from his shoobie-doobie desert digs, it would have been the modern architectural gem that Rachlin Partners built on Malibu’s famed Broad Beach in the early ’90s that’s now on the market.

Adding to the allure of the home: Ol’ Blue Eyes and his wife, Barbara Sinatra, were said to be seriously salivating over it, and considered adding the seaside stunner to their real estate portfolio. But, alas, you snooze, you lose.

Apparently, it just wasn’t in the cards for the Chairman of the Board to become the Chairman of Broad Beach.

He would have been in star-studded company in this celebrity enclave. Dustin Hoffman, Ray Romano, Danny DeVito, Pierce Brosnan, and “Modern Family” co-creator Steven Levitan live there. Past residents include Steven Spielberg, who sold his compound for $26 million, and Sylvester Stallone. Going way back, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy lived and loved there for a while, as did Ali MacGraw and Steve McQueen.

Of course, in 1991 when the home was built, Sinatra could have had it for a song (relatively speaking). Today, the four- bedroom, 6.5-bathroom, 5,809-square-foot house is on the market for $13,900,000, or for long-term lease at $65,000 per month.

Some of its more remarkable features include a seaside infinity pool, a glass-front elevator with an ocean view, decks galore, soaring 17-foot ceilings, and a spacious office loft in a master bedroom with some of the best views in the world. Sinatra would have loved the very private guest unit tucked up along the hillside, perfect for a personal assistant or valet.

“It would take years to get permitted to build a home like this today, if you ever could,” says listing agent Susan Monus of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage, explaining that it was built under the jurisdiction of Los Angeles County, before the notoriously strict Coastal Commission took over.

“It has great bones and unparalleled views. There’s no need to do any work that would require years of waiting for permits. A little updating on the kitchen and bathrooms, and you’re all set.”

And if you’re really in the mood for a celebrity splurge, the house right next door is about to come on the market for $8.1 million, according to Monus. You could build yourself a celebrity compound à la Steven Spielberg, for millions less! Now that’s worth singing about.
