The Most Expensive Home in West Palm Beach Is a Designer Dream

Less than a decade old, the most expensive single-family home in the tony community of West Palm Beach, FL, is known as Bamboo Hill. Florida’s landscape is notoriously flat, so we’ll assume this “hill” doesn’t offer much in the way of soaring views. But who needs mountaintop views when the interiors and surroundings are so spectacular?

Listed for $5.1 million, the six-bedroom stunner along the Intracoastal Waterway belongs to famed interior designer Lars Bolander. He opted to forsake the Mediterranean style often associated with the Palm Beach area. Instead, he took inspiration from his Swedish roots as well as a somewhat unlikely source—South Africa, whose plantation homes he admires for their open flow.

The result is a showcase for Bolander’s well-honed eye for design as well as an estate expressly made for entertaining. The designer’s touch can be seen in photos of the home’s enormous living room, which is a treat for fans of eclectic and intriguing interiors.

As the Wall Street Journal said of Bolander’s home in 2010, “[He] expertly mingles his Swedish heritage—pale palette, painted furniture, classical busts—with souvenirs from his travels.” Sadly for design devotees, the interior items were sold at auction in 2015, and the home is now being sold unfurnished. But Bolander has left quite a palette for a discerning buyer with an eye for glorious interior spaces.

In a twist we didn’t see coming, the designer told the Palm Beach Daily News the kitchen was his favorite room in the house.

“We have a very big kitchen, where we can seat 16 people for dinner. … We live in the kitchen more than we live in the living room.”

Outside, the home has a generous loggia overlooking gorgeous gardens and a pool. For overnight guests, there are two detached suites, each equipped with its own terrace.

Bolander designed the home after purchasing a couple of undeveloped lots in 2004. On the market since November 2014, the estate with a prestigious pedigree is a prime location for a buyer with a sense of style.
