There’s No Place Like … the Most Expensive Home in Kansas
Kansas, the black-and-white setting in “The Wizard of Oz,” isn’t the first place that comes to mind when it comes to luxury property. Think again. Meet the priciest listing in the state—now available for $10.4 million.
“It was built in 2002–03, and it’s on 4 acres in Mission Hills, which is the nicest area of Kansas City,” says listing agent Susan Fate. “The home is basically Old World craftsmanship with all sorts of modern amenities. It’s just phenomenal.”
We could barely keep up with the list of features and amenities available at the 17,600-square-foot Georgian-style estate.
The five-bedroom home’s exterior is built from reclaimed brick, and the roof is Vermont slate. Inside there’s hand-hewn hardwood flooring, hand-finished Venetian plaster walls, and archways and moldings carved by Amish craftsmen. Outside there are limestone patios and a granite fountain from the Far East. And the list goes on…
The outdoor entertaining area includes a two-story cabana, a kitchen, an infinity pool and hot tub, and a stocked pond.
The grounds are “heavily landscaped,” adds Fate.
The owners put “attention to detail at every turn, and they put way more into it than they’re selling it for,” she says.
The owners, who commissioned the home, have lived there for over a decade. Since deciding to sell, the place has languished on the market for almost a year. This isn’t unusual given the home’s prodigious price.
But Fate says there’s been some activity of late, possibly because prospective buyers have taken note of the land the mansion sits on.
There are only “two lots that are even half the size of this,” Fate notes. “It’s just very valuable dirt to start with.”
The neighborhood is as swanky as it gets for Kansas City. Mission Hills, located on the Kansas side of the city, boasts one of America’s wealthiest neighborhoods, according to Forbes. And the home certainly fits in with the exclusive enclave.
“All the features are the finest. Even the floorboards are trimmed in marble. Every detail is attended to,” Fate says.
For the buyer with a large bank account and a taste for fine details, this may be an ideal home. There’s no place like it, as Dorothy would say.
