‘Thousand Dollar Listing’ Shows the Gritty Side of Real Estate
Fine, “Million Dollar Listing” offers up a seductive, highly idealized glimpse into just how glamorous luxury real estate can be. But if you’re sick of drooling over immense mansions with indoor pools and gallery garages and are craving some gritty reality, check out “Thousand Dollar Listing,” and prepare to cringe.
This new reality show, which recently aired a pilot episode on YouTube, was created by and stars Noah Kaplan, an agent in New York with just two years under his belt (until recently he worked at Corcoran). The antithesis of Josh Altman with his slick suits and shiny cars, Kaplan works mainly with clients who can afford to pay only around $1,000 in monthly rent—which, in New York, means tours of small, sometimes windowless, often grim rooms in still-grungy neighborhoods in the East Village or Bushwick, Brooklyn.
Which is a bit sad, but what’s even sadder is Kaplan’s own story.
“I show people places I can’t afford myself,” he says. So what can he afford? “Eight hundred a month, including utilities.”
In other words, if Bravo reality shows have given you the impression that all real estate agents kick back and make a killing, this show may just set you straight.
“Last year I made $31,000,” Kaplan, 30, admits. “The year before that, I made, I think, $9,000.”
It’s not that he’s lazy or bad at his job, it’s just that the real estate business is extremely competitive. “The statistic is, there is about one sales listing for every 10 brokers in the city, which is insane,” he explains.
But Kaplan’s new reality show venture may have just turned his luck around. His show has caught the eye of some of the “Million Dollar Listing” brokers, who have invited him to join one of their teams. But even if he does start climbing to higher echelons in the real estate world, Kaplan says he still plans to produce more episodes of “Thousand Dollar Listing.” And that’s a good thing for those of us who live in places that we hope are just pit stops on our way to a better place.
