Under Armour Co-Founder Kip Fulks Shedding His Pennsylvania Hunting Retreat
Ten years ago, Kip Fulks—co-founder of Under Armour—and his wife snapped up a property with over 7,000 acres in central Pennsylvania, to indulge his love for hunting and create a family retreat.
Now they want to sell it for $13.5 million. “His kids are getting to an age where they’re getting too busy,” says listing agent Keith Lenard with Hall and Hall. Last month, Fulks embarked on a sabbatical, according to this Bloomberg article.
Steeped in history, the property adjacent to the Allegheny National Forest—dubbed North Fork Lodge—dates back 90 years, born out of a similar mission. “It was built as a hunting lodge back in the ’20s and had that vibe,” says Lenard.
Fulks was drawn to the size—not just in acreage but also the number of accommodations—as a place to host retreats for family and friends. “The whole place sleeps 32,” says Lenard, when you add up the beds in each of the buildings. He also wanted “a first-rate hunting property a short distance from his home in Baltimore,” near the headquarters of Under Armour.
“It’s extremely rare to find something of this size,” says Lenard, referring to the property’s massive acreage. The region is also a hunter’s paradise, because it’s “the only place in the Northeast where you can hunt white elk. If there’s not white elk there (now), then there will be sometime soon,” says Lenard. “It’s a significant draw for tourism.” Small game, turkeys, and white-tail deer are also hunted on the property.
A commercial kitchen, meeting room, and dining room in the main lodge allow guests to spread out, even if they aren’t into the idea of bagging game.
“The next owner’s going to be thrilled with it,” says Lenard. “We’ve gotten a lot of interest from nonprofit organizations looking for a retreat-type property.”
It could also be a cash cow. “It is suitable as a timber-investment property,” says Lenard. “That area of Pennsylvania is one of the premier hardwood-growing regions in the world.” Planted black-cherry, maple, oak, and ash trees are on a 15- to 20-year maturation cycle. It was last logged before Fulks took ownership.
