Waterfront Wishes: A Chance to Buy Your Own Lake, and the House on It
Waterfront Wishes: A Chance to Buy Your Own Lake, and the House on It
You might think a listing on a street named Skunk Hollow Road wouldn’t be worth a sniff. But in the case of this awe-inspiring five-bedroom home in Andes, NY, street signs are deceptive.
“I’ve been selling in the area for 31 years, [and] it’s probably the most exciting listing I’ve ever had,” says listing agent Susan Doig. “There’s nothing like it.”
On the market for $3.25 million, the 2,688-square-foot structure is the only house on a private lake. The seller constructed the 17-acre lake for his property, a feat that would be difficult (if not impossible) to do today, Doig notes.
“This isn’t a house on a lake. This is a lake that happens to have a house,” she jokes. Built in the 1970s, the home sits on 580 wooded acres, which were amassed in several separate parcel transactions, Doig says.
Inside, the home still offers a ‘70s rustic cabin vibe, which may be attractive to buyers who want a retro aesthetic, she notes. The home offers several areas for entertaining, including the large great room with fireplace on the main floor and a lounge with fireplace on the second floor. Both fireplaces and an outdoor kitchen area were built with roughly 16 tons of native bluestone.
The home features a master suite and a large sunroom for enjoying the lake and mountain views. A third-floor loft bedroom is ideal for guests.
Outside, there’s a screened structure near the water which can be used for entertaining and a sprawling dock where several small boats could be moored.
Nestled in the Catskill Mountains, the home could be used for year-round living, or converted into a bed-and-breakfast. However, Doig thinks the target buyers are families looking for a weekend getaway. It would make an idyllic retreat for harried urban dwellers in New York City, which is about a 2.5-hour drive away.
“Customers with young families don’t want to give up city life,” she says. But they do want a quiet country retreat, just the type of solitude and calm this property can provide.
