Where It’s At! Beck Makes Quick Work of a Cool L.A. Flip
You already know Beck for his musical chops. But he’s also has a hand in interior design. Last week, the musician listed his home in Los Angeles’ Mandeville Canyon—which he totally redesigned with some expert help—for $3.75 million with Richard Stearns and Carrie Berkman Lewis, both with Partners Trust.
Beck isn’t the first celebrity to claim this three-bedroom Tudor as his address. Before the chart-topping musician bought the place in 2016 for $3.15 million, director James Mangold owned it for nearly a decade.
Built by architect Gerard Colcord in 1964, the 2,620-square-foot home set on an acre lot is “beautiful, simple, and with authentic finishes and colors,” says Stearns. The color palette consists of whites (every wall is white as are the bed linens and slipcovers), light blues, and heather grays, and the lightest of woods, for an airy vibe that’s apparent the minute you enter the home.
It’s one of six homes on a private lane. For the restoration, Beck partnered with Pam Shamshiri of Commune Design. Although modernizing the infrastructure was of utmost importance, giving the home a fresh look inside and out also played a part. Hand-hewn beams and new contemporary lighting were installed, and the eat-in kitchen with a cute breakfast nook was renovated with built-in appliances. Landscaping was also improved, and the hardwood floors were refinished.
Given that he owned the property for only a year, was this a design project for Beck all along?
“He saw it as a unique, rare, and beautiful home and bought it out of a sense of aesthetics,” says Stearns. “He did not have a master plan for it. But he has made a great house even better.”
New to the property is a private trail leading into the woods behind the house. An updated studio located above the detached garage might entice another musician, or a buyer with a creative passion, to put in an offer.
Stearns thinks the buyer will be “someone looking for an extraordinary peaceful and natural environment, an escape, an oasis, yet just minutes from Brentwood, Santa Monica, and the Palisades.”
