Woodside Home of Late S.F. Giants Legend Willie McCovey Sells for .2M

The home belonging to late baseball legend Willie McCovey was just sold for $4.2 million. Built in the 1970s, the home is located in the upscale San Francisco Bay Area community of Woodside, CA. The home was privately purchased.

McCovey, who played 19 seasons with the San Francisco Giants, died last year at the age of 80. The Hall of Fame slugger known as “Stretch” swatted 521 home runs over his storied career.

Up in the hills, the gated home offers gorgeous views of the bay and the city lights below. The 1-acre property includes a pool, spa, waterfall, fire pit, barbecue area, lawn, and palm trees.

The 3,810-square-foot home has three levels and three bedrooms, including a vast master suite with a private deck, walk-in closet, and a bath with dual vanities.

The open layout includes a step-down living room with exposed beams and wood-paneled ceiling, and floor-to-ceiling windows.

The kitchen features newly painted cabinets, new stainless-steel appliances, granite slab counters, and a casual dining area which opens to the terrace and pool. The formal dining room opens to the rear grounds with sliding glass doors.

A paneled family room features a media center, gas fireplace, pool and terrace access, and a wet bar. The rec room pictured with McCovey’s pool table opens out to the pool, and comes with a full bath and sauna. Other amenities include a three-car garage, new paint and carpet, and ample guest parking.

While the buyer may enjoy the retro elements of the home, as well as its part in sports history, listing agent Tom LeMieux anticipates the property may undergo a few alterations.

“My understanding is that [the buyers] want to retain part of the McCovey legacy, the history of the house, and the fact Mr. McCovey had built the house in the ’70s,” LeMieux says. “At a minimum, the buyer would update, but it’s a good floor plan.”

One detail that won’t change? The home plate embedded in the front steps. “The home plate stays with the home,” LeMieux says. “The buyer asked for that, because they appreciated the legacy. And the trustee agreed to let it stay with them.”

But the pool table in the rec room has already been donated to the Junior Giants, a free kids baseball program, for which McCovey raised millions after his playing days were over.

The slugger left a profound impact on the Giants franchise. Every season, the most inspirational player on the Giants squad is given the Willie Mac Award. A statue of the Hall of Famer stands along China Basin, looking over the waters of what is now known as McCovey Cove.

McCovey’s career spanned from 1959 to 1980 with the Giants, San Diego Padres, and the Oakland Athletics. The six-time All Star and 1969 National League MVP was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1986.
